Montana’s Most Popular Rivers To Float
There are a lot of things to love about living here in Big Sky Country. But let's be honest, one of the absolute best parts? The rivers. Whether you're soaking up the jaw-dropping views, casting a line at one of our famous hatcheries, or floating the day away… Montana's rivers are tough to beat.
So, what are the most popular rivers to float in Montana? Out of the nearly 170,000 miles of flowing water in this state, we've narrowed it down to some of the best.
What Are Some Of The Best Rivers To Float In Montana?
Missouri River
The Missouri is THE LONGEST river in the United States and Montana has the start of it near Three Forks. Back in 1976 congress designated a portion of the Missouri as the National Wild and Scenic River System. Congress called it an "irreplaceable legacy of the historic American West." Needless to say the section of river from Fort Benton to James Kipp Recreation Area (roughly 149) is top on the list.
Smith River
Known for some of the most scenic views and best fishing in Montana, the Smith River is a bucket-list float. It's so popular you need to draw a permit—and the 59-mile trip usually takes about four days. Put in for the permit, and you might just be one of the lucky ones who will get to experience it.
Yellowstone River
The Yellowstone River is a favorite for a reason. You can raft the wild stretch near Gardiner or float the more laid-back section closer to Livingston. It's also a hidden gem for rockhounding. With a permit, you can hunt for agates and petrified wood along the riverbanks. It's just one more reason to love this iconic Montana river.

Madison River
The Madison River is one of Montana's most iconic spots. Known for epic views, great fishing, and plenty of ways to enjoy the water. It starts just outside Yellowstone where the Firehole and Gibbon rivers meet, then flows into Hebgen Lake. A few miles down, you'll hit Earthquake Lake, which formed after a massive quake in 1959 triggered a landslide that dammed the river. One of the more popular things to do closer to Bozeman is float the river on tubes.
