How To Stay Safe During Bear Encounters In Montana
Now that we've had the first bear attack of the year, it only seems fitting that we remind everyone that we are indeed living in bear country and that it's important to be "Bear Aware".
Part of the charm of Montana is that there is a certain "wild" aspect that still exists.
While locals are aware of all of the wildlife that calls Montana home, for those who are tourists, they might lack some of the knowledge and awareness that those of us that call Montana have.

While we are going to focus on bears, it should be noted that there are several different wild animals that call Montana home and pose a risk to your well being if you don't keep a safe distance. Animals like Elk, Bison, Moose, and others are common here and will hurt you if you get too close.
Are you bear aware?
Being bear aware is important when either living or visiting Montana. The state is home to two different species of bear. The American Black Bear and the Grizzly Bear. While the first isn't as dangerous as the second, it's important to keep your distance from both.
Here are some things you can do to be "Bear Aware":
- Hike in groups
- Carry bear spray
- Make noise while walking
- Secure all food/scents
According to the US Forest Service if you encounter a bear, they say DO NOT RUN. Instead, continue to face the bear as you walk slowly backwards while talking to identify yourself as human. If the bear continues towards you, make yourself "large and imposing" to try and scare the bear away. Make sure you have bear spray and know how to use it.
There are other things that will help keep you safe while enjoying the outdoors. Make sure you don't wear headphones, read all the trailhead signs, let someone know where your going, and when you will be back.

Finally, remember, when exploring the beautiful Montana outdoors that you're on their turf. The outdoors is their home, so make sure that you are aware of your surroundings at all times.
