According to the folks over at SmileHub, Montana is one of the best places to hang out for those who love the outdoors. In fact, most of the west coast ranked high in the survey with the exception of Nevada.

SmileHub took a look at a few different factors to determine where each state would rank, here are a list of the factors used:

  • Outdoor Gear Stores 
  • Sports and Recreation Charities
  • Outdoor Recreation Economy Impact
  • Air Pollution
  • National Parks
  • Land Designated for Parks and Wildlife

When you add it all up and do the math, not only does Montana rank high on the list, Big Sky Country actually takes the top spot. That's right, Montana is ranked 1st out of the 50 states for those who love the outdoors.

Who are the other states near the top?

Great question! Many will not be surprised to learn that Alaska is ranked 2nd on the list, followed by Colorado and then Utah. So what about 5th? That honor goes to the state of Vermont.

So what do all of these states have in common?
