What are the best rivers for whitewater rafting in Montana?

Yellowstone River

The Yellowstone River is the only undammed river in the lower 48, winding 692 miles through Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota. The portion that comes through Montana offers both big rapids and calmer sections if that's more your speed. The rapids can range from Class I to Class III, like the famous Yankee Jim Canyon.

Middle Fork of the Flathead River

Located near Glacier National Park, this is a designated wild and scenic river. It originates in the heart of the Bob Marshall Wilderness, flows into Flathead Lake, and back out until it connects with the Clark Fork. This has some of the most challenging waters in the state, with rapid changes from class II up to class IV.

Blackfoot River

A Montana favorite, the Blackfoot River is also a designated Wild and Scenic River, known for its crystal-clear water and exciting rapids during runoff season. If you're looking for the best Class II-III whitewater, May and June are prime months to hit the river. While the Blackfoot is on the smaller side compared to some of Montana's other rivers, it offers a thrilling ride early in the season. Once the runoff slows, the rapids become much milder, making it an excellent option for a more relaxed float.

Montana is packed with incredible rivers to explore, but if you're chasing high-energy whitewater action, these are some of the best options to plan an unforgettable adventure during the runoff season.
