[PHOTOS] Lightning Strikes Tree in Bozeman; Here’s the Aftermath

A strong thunderstorm moved through the Bozeman area on Thursday evening and multiple lightning strikes were reported in the Bozeman area.

One of the strikes hit a tree on Lamme St. near Hawthorne Elementary School. The lightning strike split the tree down the middle and resulted in a closure of Lamme St. on Friday while crews worked to cut down the tree and remove debris from the area.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the lightning strike did startle some Bozeman residents in the area. Pictures of the lightning strike were posted on the Bozeman Reddit page.

According to the City of Bozeman, there were several lightning strikes reported in the Bozeman area on Thursday evening. The strike caused an outage at some traffic signals around town.

The National Weather Service has some important safety tips for when thunderstorms are in the area.

Outdoor Lightning Safety

• No place outside is safe.
• If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you.
• When you hear thunder, immediately move to a safe shelter: a substantial building with electricity or plumbing or an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle with windows up.
• Stay in a safe shelter at least 30 minutes after you hear the last sound of thunder.

Indoor Lightning Safety

• Stay off corded phones, computers and other electrical equipment that put you in direct contact with electricity.
• Avoid plumbing, including sinks, baths, and faucets.
• Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
• Do not lie on concrete floors, and do not lean against concrete walls.

Yellowstone National Park also reported the first wildland fire of the year on the evening of June 24. Officials determined that the fire was started by lightning.
