I've watched enough HGTV to consider myself somewhat of an expert at this sort of thing, and I know it can be very costly, especially when a problem or two creeps up.
One of the biggest problems that Montanans face when building a new home is the cost. There will always be the debate of which is more cost-friendly, building or buying. And while there are situations where building is the better way to go, keep in mind that living in Montana isn't cheap.

How much does it cost to build a home in Montana?
According to some recent data, Montana is one of the most expensive states to build a new home. Only 7 states cost more. Those states include places like Hawaii, California, and New York.
It looks like the cost of building a home here in Big Sky Country will run you right around 3 hundred dollars a square foot. So, if you were to do some simple math, and decided you wanted to build a 2000 square-foot home, you would multiply 2000 X 300 and that would be a guesstimate.
By the way, that comes out to right around 600 thousand.
Well, that doesn't sound horrible considering today's home prices, however, keep in mind that it doesn't include land, and depending on where you're building, a homesite could easily cost 300 grand.

Even if you could build a home for 600 thousand dollars, unless you have a big down payment, you are looking at a monthly mortgage of around 4k for 30 years with today's interest rates.
That's still too expensive for many Montanans.
