It's a question that many transplants ask their first winter in the Treasure State. Why do our neighboring states seem to do better at cleaning and plowing roads than Montana?

It's also a question that will get you a few dirty looks, ridiculed on social media, and some folks suggesting that you "go back where you came from". You see, Montanans love Montana and if you're new to the state, one of the things you will want to avoid is saying anything bad about their home.

The truth is, Montana is not for everyone. For many, they come here to visit during the summer and fall in love with the place.  They decide that they're going to make the move, put the house up for sale, pack all of their stuff, and arrive ready to embrace Montana living...until the first snow.

Winter isn't for everyone. Sure, it's fun to come here for a few days during the winter months and hobnob with the fancy folks at the ski resorts. I mean, who doesn't love 5-star living, right?

The truth is, the real Montana, the places you see outside of Bozeman and Missoula, require you to have a certain ruggedness and if you aren't prepared, the whole "living the Montana dream" can turn into a nightmare.

Of course, the complaints about the winter aren't the only thing newbies talk about. They also wonder why the highways and interstates are so dark, why the wifi is slow, and why we don't have the stores they are used to.

Once again, Montana isn't for everyone, and that's alright.

It's a wonderful place to visit for a week or so. I encourage everyone to come once or twice and enjoy all that Big Sky Country has to offer. While you're here, you should buy a few overpriced Montana-themed t-shirts, you'll want to stock up on all of the Huckleberry products, and make sure to tip your servers generously.

However, if you're thinking about moving here...just remember, the roads are horrible, you can't see a thing, and there are bears...lots and lots of bears.
