The Montana Rules: How To Fit In, In Big Sky Country

So, you've decided that you are going to pack up and move to Montana, huh? Well, let me welcome you, but also let you know that there will be many here that won't welcome you, especially if you are guilty of a few things. What are those things?

Well, first up, where are you from? There are a handful of places that many Montanans have issues with. The other big one, what are your views? Depending on where you decide to put down roots, your views might either make you or break you.

For some Montanans, if you weren't born here, you aren't considered a real Montanan, so keep in mind that no matter how much good you do, you will always be a transplant. However, it just so happens that I do have a list of things that you can do that will not only help you fit in, but will generally make you a good person.

The rules for living in Montana

The Montana Wave: First up, the "two finger wave" if you're driving down the road and you pass another vehicle, or if you driving down a crowded street and someone yields for you, make sure you give them the two-finger wave. It takes little effort, but goes a long way.

Don't Trespass: Next, private property is private. Montana is full of public land that can be used by those living here, but make sure that when you go to do whatever it is your doing that you aren't on someone else's property.

Don't Complain About The Weather: Yes, we get winter here and sometimes it can be brutal. If you are new to Montana, don't complain about the weather. Remember, you choose to move here, so complaining about how cold it is won't win you friends.

Be Helpful: If you see someone that needs help, help them. This could be someone with a flat, a person that needs a jump-start, or some other reason. Montanans are helpful and if you want to fit in, being helpful will go a long way.

Be A Good Steward: Living in Montana is a privilege and it should be viewed as such. If you are one of the fortunate that get to call Montana home, make sure that you are a good steward. Clean up after yourself and others. Respect the land, the animals, and the people.
