When I first moved to Montana, the cost while high, was nowhere near where it is today.  I had taken a job in Missoula and remember thinking that the housing prices were ridiculous. (Back then a new home would cost you around 250 thousand dollars)

Fast-forward 20 years and things have only become more expensive. Houses, rent, groceries, you name it and it seems like Montanans are paying more for it.

While my wife and I do ok, when I come across information about what it takes to live in Montana comfortably, I always think that we must be the worst money managers in the world. I mean, do the folks that come up with these figures know what it costs to live here?

I bring this up because I came across a figure recently that made me chuckle. Now, maybe I'm in the minority. Maybe most Montanans can live comfortably on the figure that I'm getting ready to share, however, this Montanan can't.

Before we reveal the 'MAGIC amount' you need to live comfortably here in Big Sky Country, let's take a look at the most "Montana" towns in Montana.

How much money is needed to live comfortably in Montana?

According to Economy.com the amount of money needed to live comfortably in Montana is just over 84 thousand dollars. Once again, maybe I'm in the minority, but unless your home is paid off as well as your vehicles, I don't see it.

Montana was ranked 33rd on the list, which means that only 17 states are more affordable than Montana. Oh and if you were wondering which states those were a few of them include the following:

  • Alabama
  • Iowa
  • Lousianna
  • North Dakota
  • South Dakota

No offense to any of those places, but who wants to live in those states? Yeah, it might be cheaper, but a couple of them get hurricanes, one is filled with corn, and the other two the wind blows all the time.
