As you know, we are in the thick of things for tourist season here in Montana. Hundreds of thousands of folks are coming to Big Sky Country to check out the National Parks, plus all of the rivers, lakes, towns, etc.

Chances are, some of those folks are going to be so taken back by the beauty of a Montana summer, that they will decide to make the move.

Of course, a week at Glacier National Park isn't really all that representative of what its like living in Montana. There is still a lot of "Old West" here in The Treasure State and while you might not find that in the bigger cities, you'll certainly find it throughout the state.

So, for those of you on the fence, here are some reasons why you shouldn't move to Montana.

  • Long Winters. Just because it snows where you live doesn't mean you're ready for a Montana winter. Sometimes winter is 6 months long. Are you prepared for that? Ask yourself if you can handle snow and cold for half the year.
  • High Cost of Housing. While certain towns are cheaper than others, the cost of buying a home here can really be a challenge, especially in places like Bozeman, Kalispell, and Missoula where the prices continue to rise.
  • Fewer Job Opportunities. For those hoping to move here, work in an office, and make 6 figures a year, those jobs are few and far between.
  • Limited Retail. For those who have access to shopping malls and lots of retail options, Montana might not be the place for you. Yes, places like Billings has lots of options, but there are plenty of towns in Montana where you have very few options.
  • Summer Wildfires and Smoke. Imagine walking outside and it smelling like one huge camp fire. Wildfires and the smoke from there are a huge part of life in Montana, especially in the summer. So, if you have any sort of breathing issues, you might want to stay where you are.

There are several more reasons, but the above should be a good start. The truth, not everyone is built for Montana. However, the good news, you can always come back and visit...when it isn't snowing, or there isn't a ton of smoke.
