If you haven't heard yet, Joann's—the beloved fabric and craft store—is closing its doors nationwide. After years of financial struggles and two bankruptcy filings in the past year, the company just couldn't stitch things back together.

If you're a fan of Joann's, we're truly sorry for your loss. But if there's one thing that never changes, it's change itself. When one brick-and-mortar business closes, it opens the door for something new.

With Joann's shutting down, that retail space is up for grabs—so what should take its place?

Personally, I’d love to see an activity-based business take over—maybe an archery range, a roller-skating rink, or even a trampoline park. Indoor options are a huge win in Montana, especially since our winters are anything but short.

We asked locals what they think should move into this soon-to-be vacant real estate—here’s what they had to say.

Fashion Retailers

Many of the top suggestions were big-name clothing retailers. Montana doesn’t have as many giant box stores as other states, which adds to its unique charm. But hey, the people have spoken—here are the top picks they’d love to see move in.

Grocery Store

Trader Joe's was mentioned more frequently than any other suggestion. Surprisingly, Trader Joe's has not yet made its way to Montana. Trader Joe's consistently ranks among the top five most popular grocery stores in America and Montanan's are ready for them to show up.

Indoor Activities

These are my favorite suggestions because as we mentioned Montana winter is a thing.

  • Putt Putt Golf
  • Laser Tag
  • Roller Skating Rink
  • Indoor Playground

Although we will all miss Joann's, it presents an opportunity for future possibilities. All of these suggestions are fantastic, and it will be interesting to see how the empty space will be filled.

Beloved Montana Restaurants No Longer Around

It's never easy saying goodbye to a place you love. Maybe it was your favorite spot growing up, or the place where you had your first date with your spouse. Maybe it was the place you went to each year for your birthday. Montana has lost some legendary local businesses and we take a look at some of the very best.
