Where’d That Bear Go? Montana FWP’s New Tool Tells You
Have you ever wondered where all those relocated bears in Montana actually end up? Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks just launched a new Bear Relocation Dashboard that lets you track where grizzlies and black bears have been moved to and why.
Think of it as a digital bear tracker, not for stalking, but for staying informed. This is FWP’s third bear-related dashboard, joining the Grizzly Bear Conflict and Mortality dashboards, giving us a clearer picture of how these powerful animals are managed in Big Sky Country.
Dashboard Totals As Of August 1, 2025
Grizzly Bear Conflicts = 81
Grizzly Bear Mortality = 14
Montana Bear Relocation = 14
FWP Director Christy Clark says the dashboards are all about keeping Montanans in the loop: “The expansion of grizzly bears... has a real impact on the lives of Montanans across bear country." (FWP, 2025)
So, what can you see? A map of relocation sites, the reason behind the move, and even which species was relocated. Click on the “Table” tab and get all the bear-y details.
One important thing to know... grizzly bears are still protected under the Endangered Species Act, despite the fact that their populations in places like the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem have boomed. That means relocation rules are strict, and only bears moved by FWP are shown on the dashboard.

It’s not just a neat online tool; it's a step toward transparency and safer communities. So, if you’ve got bears in your backyard (or are just beary beary curious), it might be time to check the map before that morning hike.
