For those living in Butte, you might have felt a little rumble last night.

According to the folks over at United State Geological Center, around 9:32 pm last night a 2.9 magnitude earthquake struck east of Butte. Several residents went to social media to talk about the quake. Some felt it, others didn't, but of course earthquakes aren't new here in Montana.

According to data, Montana has about 7 to 10 earthquakes a day. Multiple that and it ends up being thousands per year.

While most of the earthquakes are small in nature, there have been some large quakes to hit The Treasure State with the most notorious earthquake that took place on August 17th many years ago. The 7.5 Hebgen Lake earthquake that happened back in 1959 and ended up killing 28 people.

Montana did see a 4.2 earthquake in the Great Falls area back in January of this year, and that was followed by smaller quakes.

Another big quake to hit Montana happened back in 1935 in the Capitol City. The 6.25 quake hit Helena in October of that year which destroyed several of the cities buildings, that quake was followed by another that happened just a few days later on Halloween that took multiple lives.

For those who are curious, here are some safety tips from ready.gov that can help you in the case of an earth quake.

  • Make sure you have an emergency plan in place

  • Make sure to secure heavy items in your home

  • If you are in your home, stay, don't run outside

  • If you are in your car, pull over and stop and put on the parking brake

  • If you are outside, move to an open area
