They say small business is the backbone of any community.

I was telling my wife about my hometown and all of the mom-and-pop places that are no longer around from when I was a kid. One of my favorite things about Montana is that we still cherish those places, especially in the smaller towns around this big, beautiful state of ours.

The type of place that you can walk into and chances are they know your name. In an age of screens and smart devices, it's nice to have a place that not only remembers, but embraces the "good ole days".

I bring this up because I stumbled across something interesting. I was browsing social media when I came across a post about the "10 Best Towns To Start A Business" so I decided to check it out.

Which Montana town is best to start a new business?

Utah was on the list as was Florida, Georgia, and Oregon (twice) but I was shocked to see a Montana location, and I was really shocked to see the town in Montana that made the list.

Coming in #5 on the list is Bozeman, Montana.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love Bozeman, heck, I live in Bozeman. I am in awe of the beauty that surrounds us, but let's be honest, Bozeman ain't cheap. So when I see we are ranked in the Top 10 for starting a new business, I start to scratch my head.

Are we talking an online business? I mean, that would make sense, but something that would require brick and mortar would mean high rent. What type of business? I could see an outdoor business doing well, or something that embraces the Bozeman lifestyle.

Unfortunately, we don't get any of those details. What it does say however, is the list is based on the following:

  • Low Competition
  • Fast Growth
  • Strong Economy
