Super Bowl XLV was the most-watched television program of all time, averaging 111 million viewers.

The game surpassed last year’s Super Bowl by 4.5 million viewers. In 2010, the game broke the long-standing record held by the finale of M*A*S*H in 1983, which attracted 106 million viewers.

* The New York Times reported that the total number of viewers watching at least some part of the game also set a new record with 162.9 million — also up from the previous record of 153.4 million last year. That means that the number of people watching the game was well past half of the total population of the U.S. — 308 million in the 2010 census.
