You want the best for your family, whether you are raising them now or planning to have them in the future. That is a given. Wanting more opportunity, stability, and safety for kids is simply human nature. In modern times, we also have access to more data than ever before. This allows families to compare where those opportunities may exist. That is exactly what WalletHub set out to do in its recent study. So, where does the Treasure State land?
The study looked at factors like financials, housing affordability, healthcare access, education, safety, and recreational opportunities. This was to give a well-rounded day-to-day life baseline.

What Are The Best States To Raise A Family In 2026?

According to the results, Massachusetts claimed the top spot overall. Massachusetts was followed by Minnesota and North Dakota. On the opposite end of the spectrum, New Mexico, West Virginia, and Mississippi ranked as the worst states for raising a family.
So where does Montana fall? Right in the middle. Montana ranked 25th overall. While that may not sound impressive at first glance, there is more to the story. Montana ranked third in the socioeconomics category, which includes factors like income growth, employment opportunities, and economic stability.
