Montana’s Most Iconic Statue And The Story Behind It.
Summer in Montana means traveling to different spots across the state and enjoying all of the beauty and uniqueness found here in The Treasure State.
One of the best places to check out is Butte, America. To say Butte is an original would be an understatement. I'm not sure there is a town that better represents the toughness of Montana more than Butte.
Butte is known for its history of mining, but that's not all that Butte has to offer. There are a lot of things to do and check out for locals and those traveling through the state.
What are some things to do in Butte?
We mentioned the mining history and some tours are worth taking plus there is the Museum of Mining. Butte also has several underground spots to check out. From old underground business locations to the old jail, you can even check out a speakeasy uncovered a few years back.
The town is fascinating, from the oldest operating Chinese restaurant in the U.S. to the old "Red Light" district to scary Ghost Tours, there's something for everyone.

What's the statue on the top of the mountain in Butte?
One of the coolest attractions is relatively new when considering the town's history. It is located just outside of town and is only available for a few months a year. Perched on top of a mountain stands "Our Lady of the Rockies". The 90-foot steel statue of Mary is not only a tribute to a local woman but a tribute to women all over the world, especially mothers.
The statue is the brainchild of Bob O'Bill. O'Bill wanted to do a tribute to the Virgin Mary after his wife had recovered from cancer treatments. So, a plan was drawn up, and after a few short years, the statue would take its place overlooking the city of Butte and western Montana. Our Lady of the Rockies is the 4th tallest statue in the United States.
Tours are available with buses taking you to the site during the summer months. If you would like to know more or schedule a tour, you need to call 800-800-LADY for more information
