For many, Memorial Day is the unofficial kick-off to summer.

Folks will get together to barbeque, socialize, and have a few cold ones. Others will head out of town and maybe do some camping or spend a little time near water.

Then there are those who will spend some time at cemetaries all across Big Sky Country. They will be places flowers on the tombstones of loved ones, while remembering them for who they were and what they meant.

However, have you ever wondered about the real meaning behind Memorial Day? I mean, other than heading to a lake, or firing up the grill, or some great 3-Day Sale, what is Memorial Day really about?

How did Memorial Day become a thing?

Memorial Day is observed on the final Monday in May and is to both honor and remember the men and women who died while serving their country in the military.

Right after the Civil War ended, folks decided to honor those on both sides who lost their lives with Decoration Day. This was a day that was spent decorating the graves of those Civil War Vets that gave all they had.

The first national observance of the day happened back in 1868.

Over the years, they decided to include other wars as well, and the name changed to Memorial Day. Back in 1971, it became a Federal Holiday. Today, the event is marked with visits to cemeteries, parades, and special ceremonies where we remember those who have fallen for their country.
