I was raised in the generation that told us that if we didn't go to college and get a degree that we wouldn't amount to much in life. So what happened? Well, most of us went to college and got a degree.

While it's true that a college education is a wonderful thing, it certainly doesn't mean that it will equal success in your professional life.

Certain degrees might be more beneficial than others, but the truth is, as the years have gone by, there are several different jobs where you can make a wonderful living and not have to attend college.

College isn't for everyone.

The first time I attended was right after high school, and I didn't do all that great. I went back years later and had much more success, and even though I have a degree, my job has nothing to do with that degree.

Things like trade schools are becoming more popular, and jobs in the field of welding, plumbing, HVAC, and certain types of construction can bring in big bucks. Plus, in many cases, you can be your own boss and work on your own terms, which is certainly attractive to many.

The folks at UTS put together a list of the states that offer the best job opportunities for those without a college degree, and it just so happens that Montana is one of the top places to be.

While just missing the Top 10, Montana came in 11th, but what was interesting was that several of our neighboring states ranked high as well.  Washington was number one, while South Dakota was 5th, Wyoming was 6th, North Dakota was 9th, Utah was 10th, and Idaho was 12th.

Some interesting facts: the average salary for those in Montana with just a high school degree is almost 45k per year, and the job growth rate for those without a college degree is over 12 percent.
