Over the last few years, it seems like the prices of everything have been on the rise.

Home prices, gas, utilities, and rent are just a few of the things that Montanans are paying more for these days. One of the biggest increases consumers have seen is the price of groceries. It started with the whole pandemic and it seems like many of us are still trying to make ends meet.

Here in Montana, the bigger towns seem to have plenty of choices when it comes to grocery stores. From big chain stores like Walmart, Albertsons, and Safeway to locally owned stores like Town and Country Foods, those who bargain shop, have some options.

US News and World Report has listed The 7 Cheapest Grocery Stores in the U.S. and two of those stores have multiple locations here in Montana. The list included the following stores:

  • Aldi
  • Woodman's Markets
  • WinCo Foods
  • Lidl
  • Market Basket
  • Grocery Outlet
  • Costco

Both Costco and WinCo are popular places to shop in Big Sky Country.

Costco has its footprint in five different Montana cities.  With locations in Billings, Bozeman, Helena, Kalispell, and Missoula the member-only store is famous for buying in bulk, however, many locations also offer discounted fuel prices and have tire centers, eye centers, a pharmacy, and bakeries.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the Pepperoni Pizza that you can buy in the Food Court, oh, and here's a pro tip, you don't have to be a member to purchase a pizza.

WinCo has four different locations across the state. With stores in Billings, Bozeman, Helena, and Missoula. WinCo is famous for having cheaper prices than many other grocery stores, plus here in Montana, they're open 24 hours a day which is perfect for those who might work 2nd or 3rd shift. Not to mention, they have an impressive bulk foods area where you can load up on everything from dog food to pasta, to all kinds of different candies.
