Government Shutdown: This Local Bank Is Helping Montanans
Well, here we are, day 9 of the government shutdown. You could say things are feeling a little... tense. What started on October 1 has turned into one of those “are we there yet?” situations. Except instead of a fun road trip, it’s the entire U.S. economy holding its breath. Across the country, everyone’s feeling it, from national park rangers to federal employees wondering when that next paycheck will hit.
Here in Montana, the effects are being felt in full force. Gateway towns to National Parks like Glacier and Yellowstone are left flying blind with unanswered questions, and the parks themselves with limited staffing. These small communities depend on visitors filling up their hotels, shops, and coffee counters this time of year. But it’s not just tourism taking a hit. The financial stress is spreading across the state, and this Montana bank is making changes to try to help the community.
Stockman Bank announced a plan to assist federal employees impacted by the shutdown. This includes furloughed workers, essential employees still on the job without pay, and members of the military.
“We recognize the stress a government shutdown creates for workers who still have bills to pay,” said Bill Coffee, Stockman Bank’s CEO. “We are happy to make accommodations for impacted federal employees to help reduce this stress and protect their credit.” - Stockman Bank Press Release.
Until the shutdown ends, the bank is deferring loan payments and will restructure debt afterward if needed. They’re also offering case-by-case help for businesses feeling the impact. It’s a small light in a rough situation. Hopefully, things in Washington get moving soon so Montana and the rest of the country can get back to normal.
