In case you’ve been living under a rock, the government has officially shut down, and it’s now the longest shutdown on record. Here in Montana, an estimated 10,387 federal workers are currently furloughed because of it.

If you’re not a government employee, you might not have paid much attention or figured it wouldn’t really affect you. Well, that’s about to change if you’re planning to travel anytime soon.
The Federal Aviation Administration just announced flight reductions across 40 major airports, which could impact thousands of flights each day. The announcement came November 5th from FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. They said this is a proactive safety measure during the shutdown. With air traffic controllers stretched thin and TSA staff limited, the skies are getting a little tense.
"Our sole role is to make sure that we keep this airspace as safe as possible. Reduction in capacity at 40 of our locations. This is not based on light airline travel locations. This is about where the pressure is and how to really deviate the pressure," Bedford said.
There’s no clear end in sight for these restrictions, but we do have some early numbers. About 4% of flights will be reduced by Friday (Nov. 7) and that number is expected to climb to 10% by next week.

It’s all pretty uncertain. With the busiest travel season of the year right around the corner and no “open” sign likely to appear in Washington anytime soon, all we can really do is grab a lawn chair and watch the goat roping. Unfortunately, it is our monkeys and it is our circus, and we will have to stick it out together.
