Having a pet is one of life's biggest joys for many people. Most folks go the traditional route—a dog, a cat, maybe a bird or a cute little hamster. You know, the "normal" pets.

But let's be honestthat's not always the case. I mean, did you watch Tiger King? Okay, that's a bit extreme—but exotic pets are more common than you'd think. That's exactly why there are laws in place—to keep the average person from deciding a tiger named Fluffy would make a good house pet. Spoiler alert: Fluffy might eat the neighbors.

Growing up in the country, I had friends with the occasional pet deer they rescued, or maybe an opossum or raccoon. But that's about as wild as my exotic pet knowledge goes. So it got me thinking—what exotic animals are actually legal to own in Montana?

BOBCAT
Yep, you can legally own a bobcat in Montana—with the right paperwork and a bit of red tape. Sure, they're cute, but let's be real: bobcats are basically house cats with chainsaws for paws. They grow bigger, stronger, and are definitely not your average lap cat.

According to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, you'll need a Fur Farm License, an environmental assessment inspection, and a few other permits (plus some fees) to make it happen. So, if you've always dreamed of owning a small, fuzzy death machineit's possible. Just be ready to do the work.

WOLVERINE
Once again, not exactly the friendliest animal to turn into a pet, but yes—it is possible to have one in Montana. Just like with a bobcat, you’ll need to apply for a Fur Farm License, pay the fees, and prove you’ve got the right setup to house this not-so-cuddly critter. Definitely not your average backyard companion.
