Montana Teen DUI Deaths Among Nation’s Highest
Montana may be known for its rugged independence, wide-open spaces, and small-town charm, but when it comes to teen DUI-related deaths, the numbers are downright sobering. A new study from Angel Reyes & Associates, a car and truck accident law firm, analyzed five years of national DUI data, and Montana has earned the unfortunate distinction of being the second-worst state in the country for teen drunk driving fatalities.
According to the data, over 10% of all DUI-related deaths in Montana involve drivers under the age of 20. That’s a gut punch for a state that already struggles with DUI rates in general. Montana was recently ranked, AGAIN, as #1 worst in the nation for DUI overall by Forbes.
"Montana ranks as the worst state for drunk driving, with 8.57 drunk drivers involved in fatal crashes for every 100,000 licensed drivers, and 7.14 people killed in crashes involving a drunk driver for every 100,000 state residents. Both rates are the highest in the nation. " - Forbes.
What’s even more troubling is that Montana doesn’t rank high in teen DUI arrests, which suggests that enforcement isn’t the problem, but the outcomes are deadlier when things go wrong. Experts point to our rural roadways, car-dependent lifestyle, and culture of personal freedom as possible contributors.

The study highlights how inexperience, risky decision-making, and easy access to alcohol continue to put young lives at serious risk behind the wheel. While some states like New Hampshire and Maryland are seeing much lower rates thanks to public transit options, Montana’s vast geography and driving culture may be making it harder to turn things around.
