This Country Star Once Played College Football In Montana
If you’re a fan of country music, and a little country music trivia, here’s one for you. Did you know that one of today’s rising country stars actually went to college right here in Montana and even played football while he was there? Yep, before he was writing chart-toppers, Tucker Wetmore was running plays for the Montana Tech Orediggers in Butte.
Wetmore still makes his rounds to see his old stomping grounds here in Montana too. This past summer, he hit two of the state’s biggest music events. He performed at the Montana State Fair in Great Falls on July 28 and taking the stage at Headwaters Country Jam in Cardwell earlier that same week. But before the bright lights and screaming fans, Wetmore’s Montana story looked a little different.
Back in 2018, the Washington native made the move to Butte to play college football for Montana Tech. “My plan was just to go to college and play as much ball as I could and then hopefully make it in the draft,” he once said. But between the long practices and the tough classes, life as a student-athlete wasn’t easy. Things took a sharp turn his freshman year when he suffered a brutal leg injury during spring ball. “We ran a post over the middle, and I ended up blowing out my entire right leg,” he said. “That was my sign right there.”

That injury ended his football dream but opened a new door. That door led straight to Nashville. Music had always been in his blood, growing up in a Samoan family where singing together was a daily occurrence. Tucker Wetmore’s journey proves that sometimes the toughest setbacks lead to the best comebacks.
