Top 8 Must Have Side Dishes For A Perfect Montana Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is just around the corner and many Montanans are planning out their turkey day menus.
One of the more popular holidays, Thanksgiving is a chance for family and friends to get together, eat, watch football, eat, put up Christmas decorations, and eat. Of course, the traditional Thanksgiving meal is turkey and all of the "fixin's" but your list of "fixin's" might be different than someone else's.
We asked Montanans the following question "Other than Turkey, what is something you have to have for Thanksgiving" and while there were several traditional answers, we also had a few that were a bit surprising.
It seems that several Montana families have certain traditions when it comes to food and often these recipes have been passed down from generation to generation. I know growing up we didn't have a Thanksgiving dinner that didn't include broccoli/rice casserole.
Of course, there were several variations of popular dishes, however, we've put together a list of the Top 10 Must Have Side Dishes For A Montana Thanksgiving:
Mashed Potatoes
Mashed Potatoes are a fan favorite for folks of all ages, but the question is gravy or no gravy?
Sweet Potatoes/Yams
People tend to love sweet potatoes during the holidays, and it makes sense because there are a ton of things that you can do with them. From being topped with roasted marshmallows to being baked in a pie, they're a top choice.
Stuffing/Dressing
Personally, this is my favorite. It's not Thanksgiving without stuffing/dressing and while many people prefer the homemade kind, the stuff out of the box ain't bad either.
Prime Rib/Ham
Not everyone is a fan of turkey, so having a second meat option isn't a horrible idea, and let's be honest, if you're going to have another protein, you certainly could do a whole lot worse than prime rib or ham.
Hot Rolls
Whether store-bought or homemade, hot rolls are an absolute favorite when it comes to the Holidays.
Green Bean Casserole
A popular dish with several different variations, for many Montanans you can't have Thanksgiving dinner if you don't have green bean casserole. The question is, do you put the fried onions on top?
Cranberries
Whether it's from the can, or in some sort of fruit salad, cranberries are a must-have for a Montana Thanksgiving dinner.
Pie
Clearly, the most popular choice of pie around Thanksgiving is pumpkin, but pecan is also a popular choice along with apple and many others.
