Small Montana Town Makes List For Poorest In The State
When you look around Bozeman, Butte, Livingston, Hardin, whatever Montana town you live in, you probably think about how lucky you feel to live in what has been dubbed, "The Last Best Place".
But let's be real for a minute, not everything is always rainbows and butterflies. Every town is going to have it's flaws and there is no reason to start listing them, we are smart enough individuals, we can figure them out for ourselves.
Unfortunately, there is one Montana town that has made a list that isn't necessarily the type of list you brag about being on. It's more sad than anything, but every state will have a town like this. Those are the facts.
A survey from 24/7 Wall St. came out in October of this year that had a list of all the poorest towns/cities in each state.
The poorest town in Montana is Plains.
The average median household income for Montana is a little over $60k, Plains' median household income is just under $25k.
Education in Montana is important and we have been acknowledged nationally for that exact thing. Only 11.8% of Pains, MT adults have a bachelor's degree or higher, which is significantly lower than the state average of 33%.
On average, 9% of Montana residents use SNAP benefits. Almost 35% of Plains' residents are on the helpful assistance program.
As you know, home values throughout the state are high. Now, when you average it all out to include all of the small, well-loved communities, the median home value is actually a tad over $263k. In Plains, you will find a median home value of $153k.
With a small population of less than 1200, Plains doesn't hold a flame to the larger populated areas. When 24/7 Wall St. took this survey, they considered a total of 88 different towns.
