Where Are The Best Places To Retire In Montana?
By nature I am a planner. Most of the time life intervenes and decides to change those plans, but not much you can do about that. Regardless, making a plan, having goals, and working towards them are all great things. Depending on what stage of life you’re in, retirement planning might be high on the agenda, or it might be a distant goal. Recently, WalletHub came out with a list of 182 cities spread out across the country that are “Best” for retirement in 2025.
Now, when we’re talking about retirement, most people picture golf carts, palm trees, and enough sunscreen to coat a small village. But Montana? We’re a different breed. We like our open spaces, mountain views, and maybe swapping the golf cart for a fly-fishing trip. And while we might not scream “retiree hotspot” on paper, two Montana cities made WalletHub’s list: Missoula at a surprisingly strong #39 and Billings at #149. Not too shabby for one of the most rural states in America.
So what makes Missoula shine? Think vibrant culture, great access to healthcare, and endless outdoor recreation. If you want to spend retirement floating rivers in the summer and skiing in the winter, Missoula’s might be your jam. Billings, on the other hand, is less flashy than Missoula, with solid medical facilities, plenty of restaurants, and a lower cost of living than many western states.

Of course, we’re not topping the charts like Orlando or Scottsdale. Let’s be honest though, Montana isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. And that’s exactly why it works. Fewer crowds, more space, and a lifestyle that balances small-town community with big outdoor adventure. Sign me up for that retirement life.
