Food Recall: Are Radioactive Shrimp Being Sold At Walmart In Montana?
If shrimp is on your dinner menu, you might want to double-check the bag in your freezer. The FDA is waving a big red flag about certain Great Value frozen raw shrimp sold at Walmart after concerns of possible contamination with Cesium-137. Yes, the radioactive stuff.
Here’s what went down: U.S. Customs and Border Protection spotted traces of Cesium-137 in shipping containers at four ports. Follow-up testing on shrimp from Indonesia’s BMS Foods also turned up positive results. The good news? The FDA says none of the contaminated shrimp has made its way into the U.S. food supply AND none of these radioactive shrimp were sold in Montana.
Still, officials aren’t taking chances. The FDA is calling for a recall of all shrimp products shipped after those containers tested hot. Specifically, shoppers should steer clear of these Great Value frozen raw shrimp bags:

- Lot code: 8005538-1, Best by 3/15/2027

Here is a list of the states where shrimp were sold in Walmart stores: AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, LA, MO, MS, OH, OK, PA, TX, and WV.
If your freezer holds one of these, the FDA’s advice is simple: toss it.
According to the agency, the shrimp from BMS Foods violates federal safety laws because it appears to have been stored in unsanitary conditions where radioactive contamination could have happened. Until the company gets its act together, its products are banned from entering the U.S.

As for Cesium-137? The EPA says high exposure can lead to burns, radiation sickness, and even death. So yeah, better safe than sorry when it comes to your shrimp scampi.
