This New School Rule Could Change Student Life In Montana
There is no doubt we are living in a time full of challenges that people could never have imagined 50 or even 30 years ago. If you had told someone in the 80s that folks would be so glued to screens that they would walk straight into light poles or crash their cars because of distraction, they would have laughed you out of the room.
The part that worries me most is the kids growing up in a world where this is normal. Many studies in recent years have taken a hard look at how technology and constant connectivity affect younger generations. To be frank, the findings are not great. Researchers are trying to keep up, but technology moves fast and the effects on kids move even faster.
Here in Montana, some steps are being taken to address the issue. Bozeman and Gallatin high schools will be making a big change Fall 2026. Cell phone use will be banned both inside and outside the classrooms. There are already policies in place, but the new ones expand further. Now the restrictions will include hallways and the cafeteria, all in an effort to support better student mental health.
The decision came after a local group made up of students, teachers, administrators, and community health professionals reviewed two studies you can fined HERE and HERE. The data pushed the group to recommend stronger limits on phones because of lower self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation over time.

Montana is not alone. More than 30 states have already adopted some form of school cell phone restriction. Students will still be allowed to carry phones in their backpacks, so they will have access in emergencies, but otherwise it's a no-go.
