Warmer than average temperatures does not even begin to cover what Montana has been seeing lately. It has not just been a degree or two above normal. We are talking swings closer to 10 degrees higher than what this time of year usually brings.

In Bozeman, it has been especially noticeable. The average high from November through January hit 45 degrees, which is about 10 degrees above normal. What is more surprising is that three of the warmest winters here have all happened within the past five years.
That kind of warmth, mixed with steady wind, has started to impact more than just daily life. It is hitting the ski season hard. Bridger Bowl made the call to shut down early, with closing day landing on March 22. Resort managers shared the update in a lighthearted way, standing barefoot in a puddle at the base area, but the situation behind it is real.
There is a bit of a silver lining. Showdown Ski Area is offering discounted lift tickets for season pass holders from other Montana resorts that had to close early due to a lack of snow. They said they will continue to do that as long as they can before they are forced to close down too.
