Big news in the conservation world is circling around wolves once again. This time Montana is not at the center of the conversation, but other states are trying to gain control over their own population like us.

Wolves have already been delisted in Montana. Gray wolves in Montana have been managed at the state level for years now. Federal protections were removed back in 2011 after wolf populations in the Northern Rockies rebounded well beyond recovery goals. Since then, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks has overseen wolf numbers, seasons, and management strategies based on science and population data. What is happening now is that other states may be following a path Montana has already walked.

A bill recently passed in the U.S. House of Representatives called the Pet and Livestock Protection Act. If it becomes law, it would remove federal Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves in many remaining states and return management authority back to those states. Supporters look to states like us, Montana, as an example of what state-led management can look like once recovery goals are met.

Lawmakers backing the bill argue that wolf populations across parts of the country have grown significantly since the species was first listed decades ago. They say continued federal involvement is no longer necessary in the remaining 44 states, and that the states are better off handling the balance themselves.

For Montanans, this debate feels familiar. We have already seen what state management looks like, for better or worse, and opinions here remain deeply divided.
