Today marks 40 years since one of the most shocking moments in American history. On January 28, 1986, people across the country, including families here in Montana, sat down in front of their TVs to watch a space shuttle launch that was supposed to be routine. No one expected what happened next.

At 11:39 a.m. Eastern Time, the Space Shuttle Challenger lifted off from Kennedy Space Center. Just over a minute after launch, the shuttle suddenly broke apart in the sky. All seven crew members were killed. The live broadcast was viewed in classrooms, living rooms, and offices watched it unfold in real time, unsure at first what they were even seeing.

Among the crew was Christa McAuliffe, a teacher chosen to represent educators and inspire kids across the country.  Afterward, the shock turned into confusion, and then the questions started rolling in.
Investigations later determined the disaster was caused by a failure in seals inside one of the rocket boosters. The unusually cold temperatures that morning were a major factor in them failing. That small breakdown had devastating consequences.

Even here in Montana, thousands of miles away, the impact was real. Schools stopped lessons, flags were lowered, and conversations shifted. Forty years later, Challenger is still remembered. Not just for the tragedy, but for the lives behind it. The crew’s courage and dedication continue to inspire curiosity, exploration, and respect for the risks taken in the name of discovery.
