Montana has a rich history. Whether it's a historical battlefield or an old mining town, you will find that Montana is a place unlike any other.

While you will find many cities and towns that have all of the latest and greatest conveniences, there are still parts of the state that look exactly like it did a couple hundred years ago. Many of those old towns are still around, even though no one is living in them.

I was recently on TikTok and watching Montana videos where someone posted a "fact" that said there were more ghost towns in Montana than actual living towns. While it's close, that's not exactly true.

How many Ghost Towns does Montana have?

A quick Google search shows that Montana has over 100 Ghost Towns. While that might seem like a high number, and it is, it lacks in comparison to Texas which boosts over 400 Ghost Towns. However, we're still near the top of the list when it comes to states with the most Ghost Towns.

While some of the Montana Ghost Towns are more popular than others, one thing they all have in common is they're a window into Montana's past.

Some of these towns are a little more tourist-friendly than others. While not technically a ghost town, Virginia City is wildly popular during the summer months. Then of course there is Bannack which is not only a ghost town, but a State Park.

This Family Friendly "Montana Town" Is Frozen In Time

One of the coolest places to check out in Montana is the "Old Montana" town of Nevada City. Located just on the other side of Virginia City, Nevada City is the perfect example of what life was like back during the gold rush in the 1800s.

With several different buildings to tour and friendly folks to guide you through your visit, as well as tell you the stories of the times, Nevada City is not only educational but fun for the whole family.
