Montana State Alum Shows Up At AFC Championship Game
If you watched the game yesterday between the Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs you no doubt saw some of the biggest stars in the game.
Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Travis Kelce were on the field battling it out, and of course, the most popular woman in the world, Taylor Swift was also there. While the Ravens were the favorite to win the game and punch their ticket to the Super Bowl, in the end, the Chiefs are going to their 4th Super Bowl in 5 years.
So what does a game between a team from the East Coast and one from the Midwest have to do with Montana?
If you stuck around and watched the Lamar Hunt AFC Championship Trophy presentation, then you saw one of the greatest Bobcats of all time, Jan Stenerud hand over the Trophy to the owners of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Who is Jan Stenerud?
For those born in the last few decades, you might not be familiar with Mr. Stenerud. Born in Norway, Jan came to America to attend school at Montana State on a skiing scholarship and through a few very unlikely events, ended up on the Bobcats football team as their kicker back in the mid-'60s.
Strenerud would move on to the NFL and play for the Kansas City Chiefs for several seasons which would result in not only becoming a Super Bowl Champion but would be the first kicker inducted into the National Football Hall of Fame back in 1991.
Sternerud is also in the Montana State University Hall of Fame, he was inducted back in 1986.
Jan Sternerud who is now in his early 80s was selected as a member of the 75th Anniversary NFL team as well as the 100th Anniversary NFL Team. His numbers (78) and (3) were retired by both the Montana State Bobcats and the Kansas City Chiefs.
