Montana Has One Of the Best-Preserved Ghost Towns In America
One of the clichés about the West is ghost towns. You know the scene, dust blowing across Main Street, a saloon door creaking in the wind, maybe even a tumbleweed making its big-screen debut. While that image is a bit of an exaggeration, there’s some truth to it. Montana is home to more than 100 ghost towns. That might sound impressive, but Texas brags about having over 400. Still, ours pack a punch in charm and history, especially central Montana's Garnet.
Back in 1898, Garnet wasn’t just some forgotten outpost. It was booming, with around 1,000 people calling it home. Gold miners and their families worked hard to carve out a life in the Garnet Mountains, building businesses, schools, and communities. Fast forward a hundred years, and Garnet has traded in the gold rush for ghost town status.
@ghosttownswest Garnet was once a thriving mining town in the 1890’s. Now, all that remains are the abandoned buildings and memories of the people who once were. #wildwest #visitmontana #ghosttown #history #fyp ♬ ominous - insensible
Today, Garnet is one of Montana’s best-preserved ghost towns, open year-round (though winter visitors better bring a snowmobile or skis). From May through mid-December, you can drive in, weather permitting. Just keep in mind, once the snow piles up, it’s a “park-and-hike” situation.
It’s not just a walk through history either. Your $10 admission, which you pay to the ONE hired summer employee, helps keep Garnet standing. The Bureau of Land Management uses fees to preserve, protect, and interpret the town. The Garnet Preservation Association also depends on donations, memberships, and even sales from the visitor center gift shop.

So next time you’re itching for something different than your average Montana hike or day trip, skip the breweries and head for Garnet. The people might be gone, but the stories, creaky floorboards, and wild west vibes are very much alive.
