Why Is Montana Becoming A Hotspot For AI Data Centers?
AI is here and yes it is nifty and incredibly convenient. I use it, you probably use it, and we have barely tapped into what it can actually do. But with all this shiny new tech comes a side of the story that does not get nearly enough attention. Resources. And a lot of them. While people love to joke about AI becoming self-aware and taking over the world... A real issue is happening right now in many places, including Montana.
AI lives in data centers. Not some cloud floating above us, but massive warehouses packed with servers that run nonstop. A single large data center can use as much electricity as a small city. Some estimates put it at 50 to 100 megawatts per facility, which is enough to power tens of thousands of homes.

Now add cooling into the mix. Those servers get hot, fast. Data centers use water cooling systems that can use millions of gallons of water per day. To put that into perspective, one large facility can use as much water as a town of several thousand people.
Montana, unfortunately, is being looked at for more AI data centers. But why? Wide open space, lower property taxes, fewer people asking questions, and access to resources. Rural areas are especially targeted because land is cheap and communities are often eager for economic development. Montana also has a skilled workforce, cooler temperatures, and a lower property tax rate.

There are already dozens of data centers operating in Montana, including more than 20 in the Great Falls area alone.
A proposed 5,000 acre AI data center near Broadview, a town of about 130 people, is now bringing this issue front and center. The plan is designed to attract tech giants like Google, Apple, and Meta. That also raises serious questions. Where does the water come from? Who pays for infrastructure upgrades? What happens when energy resources are maxed?

AI is not going anywhere. But Montana should not quietly become a resource bank for tech companies without a real conversation about the long-term cost.
