Monster Rainbow Trout Removed From Ennis Pond

Anglers from all over the world flock to Montana each year hoping to catch the fish of a lifetime. We are very fortunate to live in a place with such an abundance of quality fisheries.

On June 21, Kyle Jones, an employee of PondDoctor in Bozeman was called to investigate a large rainbow trout that was floating upside down in a pond near Ennis.

The area is frequented by herons and eagles, and the owner of the property thought that the trout may have been attacked by an eagle.

The large rainbow trout was somewhat of a legend in the Ennis area, it had been referred to as the legend of Jack Creek.

According to Jones, PondDoctor was called in to retrieve this trout from beneath the surface of a groundwater pond. The trout measured 33” and weighed over 20 lbs. For reference, the Montana state rainbow trout record from 1997 stands at 38.5”. ⁣

The fish had been seen in the pond for the last 7-8 years and appeared to have died from old age. According to reports, the monster rainbow had only been caught once a couple of years ago on a fly rod.
