Get Hooked on Fly Tying: Must-Attend Events in Montana
If you're searching for a new indoor activity to escape the frigid Montana winter, learning how to tie flies could be a great choice. With numerous fly shops and clubs in the Bozeman area, you have plenty of events to choose from where you can enhance your skills or learn this new hobby.
Here are a few bug-making classes and fly-fishing gatherings happening in the 2025 New Year.
Every Thursday night from 6-9 pm, Bozeman Fly Supply hosts a free fly tying meet-up. Participants are encouraged to bring their vise, tools, and fly materials to get the night started. This is not an official class; it's more of a hangout. However, if you're interested in getting more serious about fly tying, they offer an intro course on other specific dates for $120.
Madison Gallatin Chapter of Trout Unlimited
On January 8th, you can bring the whole family and join the Madison Gallatin Chapter of Trout Unlimited for a night of fly tying, demonstrations and more! This free event will be hosted at the GranTree Inn in Bozeman, with doors opening at 6:30. All materials will be provided for your first bug-making experience. This is an excellent event to dip your toes in the water, especially with so many experienced fly fishers in attendance.
For the Ladies!
Freestone Ladies Club in Livingston is a social club for women who want to go fishing and learn more about the sport. They host monthly meet-ups on the first Tuesday of every month and have fly-tying nights, typically at Hatch Finders. They do not currently have the new schedule posted, but you can stay updated with their calendar HERE.
Though Rivers Edge does not currently have any events listed, they are planning on having beginner group classes starting January/February 2025. Once confirmed, they will post new event details on their social media.
