Complete Guide To the Best Small Town Festival in Montana
In a state known for its wide skies and wilder adventures, one small town takes a moment each summer to celebrate the humblest of heroes. The potato.
Manhattan’s Potato Festival: A Slice of Small-Town Montana Magic
On Saturday, August 16, the quiet farming town of Manhattan, Montana, will come alive for the Manhattan Potato Festival. It's a joyful, one-of-a-kind festival that blends quirky potato pride with old-fashioned community charm.

The festival draws thousands of people to Manhattan’s Main Street, where the smell of fresh-cut fries, baked potatoes, and sizzling fair food hangs in the late-summer air. This isn't your average town fair. This is Montana's potato capital on full display.
Keep an eye out for the Townsquare Media Bozeman radio station vehicles in the parade at 11:00 a.m. As they roll along, they'll be tossing out delicious potato chips generously provided by Town and Country Foods.
Things kick off early with a pancake breakfast served by the Manhattan Volunteer Fire Department. Think eggs, bacon, sausage, and strong coffee, dished out by neighbors who might also be marching in the parade an hour later. From there, the day rolls into full-on celebration mode.
The Manhattan Potato Festival is a mix of marching bands, tractors, vintage cars, and wildly creative potato-themed floats. Check out a schedule below:
- Fireman's Breakfast - 6:00 AM - Food's gone
- Jim Oriet 5K - 7:30 AM - Manhattan School
- Starch Trek Parade - 11:00 AM - Main Street
- Spudfest Car Show - 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM - Altenbrand Park (School)

All day long, the town square transforms into a bustling hub of vendor booths, live music, and family-friendly chaos. Sack races, duck derbies, and face painting galore.
The Manhattan Potato Festival is a snapshot of small-town Montana at its finest. It’s volunteers running on coffee and sunshine. It’s a handshake from someone who helped build the float you're admiring. It’s live music at the car show, laughter from kids chasing bubbles in the park, and neighbors catching up in the shade of the vendor tents.
For locals, it’s a reunion. For visitors, it’s a slice of life most don’t get to experience anymore. Genuine, grounded, and a little bit silly in the best possible way.
Beyond the fun, the festival honors the agricultural roots that have sustained the Manhattan-Amsterdam-Churchill region for generations. This is seed potato country, after all.
So whether you’re in it for the nostalgia, the fresh-cut fries, or just an excuse to experience a unique Montana tradition, SpudFest is your kind of Saturday.
