I was looking at my daily calendar and noticed that today is "Weed Appreciation Day".

I'll be honest, I was totally prepared to tell the story about when I was 18 and my buddy and I got a hold of some stuff from then dude that we worked with at the time, but then I realized that wasn't the type of "weed" that's supposed to be appreciated today.

So we will save that story for another day.

No, this is not an article about the "hippie lettuce", we are actually talking about real weeds.  The kind that can absolutely ruin the look of an otherwise perfect-looking lawn.  The horrible little monsters that grow 2 feet in just under 3 hours.  Those nasty little creatures that sprout up between the cracks of curbs and sidewalks.

I mean, is there even a purpose for weeds?

What I can tell you is there here in Montana, we have several "noxious weed" varieties. So, let's say that you're not a weed nerd and you have no idea what a "noxious weed" is, don't feel bad, I didn't either. However, after a quick google search, I found this from Wikipedia.

"A noxious weedharmful weed or injurious weed is a weed that has been designated by an agricultural or other governing authority as a plant that is injurious to agricultural or horticultural crops, natural habitats or ecosystems, or humans or livestock."

So, in simple people's terms, it's a bad weed.

Here in Montana, we have a number of our own "noxious weeds".  In fact, some are actually rather beautiful in appearance. If you want more information about all of the different weeds you can find around the state, Montana State University Extension has a great website with a ton of information.  In fact, you can check it out right here.

So are there good weeds?

Well, here's the issue that I keep running into, when I type "what is a good weed" into Google, it keeps going back to the "hippie lettuce". So, as far as I can tell, it seems most weeds are bad.  So, I'm not sure why we have a "Weed Appreciation Day" at all, however, we do and today is the day we celebrate it.
