Like most of you, I love hiking though the Montana trails. I love floating the many rivers. I also like to know that those trails and rivers are being kept clean and the grounds are maintained, unless each and every one of you are planning on grabbing a garbage bag and going to town on trash and debris throughout these areas?

Let's be honest, many of us have no desire to go and clean up areas on our free time.

In order to make sure our state is well maintained for all of us, last year a mandatory conservation license was instated. What this means is, each person using any trail, any body of water, basically any outdoor recreational area needs to have the conservation license.

This isn't just for residents of Montana, this is for literally everyone using the outdoors, give or take a spot or two, during any season of the year.

This license is not expensive at all, in fact it's a small fee to make sure that our state stays clean and well maintained.

Conservation License Costs:

  • Resident- $8
  • Youth 12-17 Resident -$4
  • Senior 62+ Resident - $4
  • Nonresident -$10

If these costs seem too high, then consider that when you are floating the popular Madison River and the parking lots are full of trash and debris or your favorite trail becomes overgrown and lost it's beauty.

Part of why Montana is so stunning and desired is because the FWP and many other organizations are going out of their way to keep it safe and clean. Your conservation license fee goes directly to this purpose.
