Driving Tips For School Buses and School Zones
We need to be better especially when buses are stopped on the street and look out for kids when they are crossing the street.
Bozeman Police on their Facebook released a bunch of really great tips on driving around our community when near school zones and when you see buses out and about picking up or dropping off kids.
First off, when you are coming close or near a school zone, you might want to slow down and keep your eyes open for students, especially around the high schools. Students are going to be out and about grabbing lunch and will be using crosswalks and expect folks to stop. So make sure your full attention is on driving and paying attention.
The biggest driving tip we can give is to pay attention to school buses when they are driving around because they do make frequent stops all over. Also, if the school bus STOP sign is out, the opposing traffic must stop until the sign is pulled back. This is so students can safely cross the road to get back home. I have seen folks fly through school bus stop signs and almost hit kids.
We need to be more vigilant and help make these kids feel safe especially when they return home. As a kid who rode the school bus home, crossing a highway or busy street can be pretty terrifying when folks are looking at their phones instead of the road.
Let's all do our part and keep kids safe and drive safely.
