Montana Homebuyers Beware: You Might Be Buying a “Lemon House
Purchasing a new home can be stressful. No, scratch that—it is stressful. There’s no sugarcoating it. You’ve got inspections, mortgage rates, moving trucks, and that one friend who swears they “love unpacking” (liar). But the biggest fear of all? Accidentally buying what is called a “lemon house.” You know the kind. It looks perfect on the outside, but peel back that floral wallpaper and bam, black mold jump scare. Open the breaker box? Surprise! Someone’s DIY electrical work is straight out of a horror movie.
A lemon home is every buyer’s worst nightmare. On the surface, it’s a charming Montana dream house. It has mountain views and a cozy fireplace, but under the hood? A wallet-draining disaster waiting to happen.

According to new data from MovingPlace, Montana ranks 12th in the nation for “lemon home” risk. The biggest issue? More than half of the homes here (about 53%) could need foundational repairs. That’s right, your cute craftsman cottage might be shifting more than you think. And if that doesn’t make you nervous enough, plumbing issues top the list of common problems, followed closely by window failures and water damage. In other words, your pipes, panes, and perimeter could all be plotting against you.
Now, Montana’s not the worst offender (Rhode Island takes that crown), but we’re far from in the clear. Between our harsh winters, heavy snow loads, and older housing stock, the state’s homes take a beating year after year.
