Montana’s Iconic Baxter Hotel Set For Grand Restoration
Bozeman has a handful of instantly recognizable landmarks. Flash a photo of the M, the old water tower, Bobcat Stadium, or the Baxter Hotel and most people immediately know exactly where you are. Another one that longtime locals recognize is the flashing blue light on top of the Baxter, although it has not made many appearances this winter. While the building has not been a true hotel for decades, that is about to change in a big way.

The Baxter Hotel is set to be restored to its original purpose as Bozeman’s signature boutique hotel, with construction beginning this spring. When it reopens in the fall of 2027, the timing will be fitting. The relaunch will land right around the building’s 100-year anniversary. It will also mark the first time the Baxter has functioned as a hotel since the 1980s.
The building first opened in 1929, and its story is deeply rooted in community pride. Back in the late 1920s, local leaders felt Bozeman deserved an iconic hotel. Instead of waiting on outside investors, roughly 250 locals stepped up. Ranchers, business owners, and families pooled their resources because they believed in the future of this town.

That same community-first mindset is guiding the restoration today. The project is being led by the Loseff family of Bozeman and the Orizotti family of Butte, who have been majority owners since 2004. Throughout the renovation, the Baxter will continue hosting weddings and events. Café Aurore, Bacchus Pub, and Ted’s Montana Grill will stay put, while the upper apartments are turned back into guest rooms.
