Bannack Days: Montana’s Ghost Town Comes Back To Life
Unfortunately, we still can’t travel in time, but you can get pretty darn close—and it’s happening soon right here in Montana. If you’ve never been to Bannack State Park, let this be your sign to make the trip for Bannack Days, coming up the third weekend in July (7/19 -7/20).
Bannack isn’t just any ghost town. It’s where Montana’s first major gold discovery happened back on July 28, 1862, and the place exploded with people chasing their fortunes. At its peak, Bannack was home to over 3,000 residents and even held the title of Montana’s first territorial capital.
Fast forward to now, and what’s left is one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the state. You can walk down Main Street, where more than 50 original buildings still stand—weathered log cabins, storefronts, and saloons that look frozen in time. Trust me, it gives “wild west” a whole new meaning.
During Bannack Days, the town comes alive with reenactors, historic displays, old-fashioned games, music, and hands-on demos like gold panning and blacksmithing. It’s a full-blown western throwback party and it's family-friendly, educational, and just plain fun.
If you're making a weekend of it, the park has 28 campsites, a Wall Tent, and even a hike-in/bike-in camp spot. Come winter, Bannack also turns into a frozen wonderland with ice skating on the dredge pond, complete with a warming house and free loaner skates.

Whether you’re into history, camping, or just looking for an excuse to roam, Bannack is one of those Montana places that sticks with you. Learn more at the Bannack Association website—and maybe toss them a donation while you’re at it. They help keep this slice of Montana heritage alive and kickin’.
