The traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating has been a Halloween tradition in North America for over 100 years. So being told that it should be avoided or even banned in some places seems a little strange. But this year due to concerns of COVID-19 the CDC  is suggesting many Halloween traditions be avoided and they have highlighted different levels of risk for activities associated with the holiday.

Will Halloween be just another event and celebration taken down by the COVID-oriented cancel-culture? Many are trying new ways to safely participate in the holiday so they can give a sense of normalcy to the youngsters. Here are some creative ways to trick-or-treat this Halloween:

Clean Candy

Make sure the candy your kiddos collect is free and clear of germs before you let them dive into their precious bag. You can choose to wipe down each candy or perhaps wait 72 hours. The CDC states that coronaviruses on surfaces and objects naturally die within hours to days.

Don't Participate

If you are truly concerned there is no obligation to participate, but please remember that others may choose to. Not participating is a completely viable option especially if you or someone in your household is immune-compromised. You can make it clear that you are not participating by leaving your porch lights turned off on Halloween.

Find Safe Ways To Distribute Candy

Distributing candy and staying 6 feet away may be a challenge, but it's totally doable. Get creative! You can pre-bag your candy so it's easy to distribute.

From there you could try one of these options for delivery:

Drone

  • It's raining candy! Well not really. But you can use a drone to safely deliver candy to youngsters at a safe distance.

Remote Control Car

  • Load up the car and then drive it out to the sidewalk or driveway for a distanced delivery.

Hang Treats

  • Hang prepackaged bags of candy from low tree limbs for kids to grab.

Treat Bags to Grab

  • Space treats out on your driveway and sidewalk for trick or treaters to safely grab.

Create a Candy Slide

  • Something as simple as a tube can be attached to your railing and decorated to be festive as well!
  • One man from Ohio has really thought his plan through and is offering a completely "touch-free" experience for trick-or-treaters with a sign at the bottom of the tube to show them where to hold their bags.  He is also planning on wearing a mask and changing gloves frequently. Sounds like he's determined to make Halloween happen. See his plan below.

Create a Halloween Zip-Line

  • This idea is by far my favorite idea! Maybe because there's something in it for the parents too. But who wouldn't want to trick-or-treat like this?!
  • The owner of Thompson Woodworks created a festive zip-line using a cable and some pulleys. He then used a fishing reel to retrieve the beer caddy. Watch the video below for a demonstration.
