Need a kid-free night?

The holidays are approaching. I don't have kids so I have only an inkling of how crazy it must be to do your holiday shopping with your little ones in tow. The amount of respect I have for the moms and dads I see at the mall wrangling their kids, while trying to shop is HUGE. That being said...take a night off from the kids and let them hang with 4-H Teens at Spire Climbing Center.

Haven't you heard?! 4-H isn't just about cows, plows, and sows. Some of the most popular projects in 4-H don't require a yard at all. They include robotics, music, arts and crafts, and sewing. Plus there is a "self determined" project which means your child can pretty much do anything in 4-H that they are passionate about. And most projects and clubs only meet once a month (so you still have time for all your other stuff)!

As the 4-H Military Program Coordinator I get to work with amazing people. One of them is Brenda Baker who's husband is serving overseas. She is the President of the Family Readiness Group here in Belgrade. The FRG supports familes of service men and women while they are overseas. AND GUESS WHAT?..............THEY'RE COMING HOME!! Check out the email I just got from Brenda (makes me want to cry in excitement).

The Saturday Farmers Markets are drawing to a close and the new 4-H year is quickly approaching. Come visit me at the MSU Extension Booth THIS SATURDAY to find out how your child can get involved in 4-H!! MSU Extension has so many programs for youth and adults covering a vide variety of topics. I work with 4-H youth in Gallatin County, but receive emails about programs going on all over the state. Here is some information about the Master Gardener Program and a demonstration they will be having tomorrow at the Gallatin Valley Farmer's Market. I'll be at the market (like I am every Saturday) buying produce, window-shopping for jewelry, and wearing out/socializing my dog. Maybe I'll see you there?!

All Shook Up: With Too Much Salt

I'm wierd. I don't use salt. I never use it when I cook, unless a recipe calls for it (but then again I don't follow recipes often). I never add salt to my meal once it is on a plate. I don't know why, but I don't have the salt craving like most of the population. I also don't have high blood pressure.

Stop me before i volunteer again!!
I recently gave my friend a magnet that says “Stop me before I volunteer again” and was thinking I should get one for myself. If I’m not working, riding my horse, or playing with my dog, I’m usually volunteering somewhere. Walking dogs at Heart of the Valley, raising money for The National MS Society, teaching first aid classes for the Red Cross... Volunteering is just something that has always been a part of my life. The national volunteer rate went up to 26.8% in 2009, with 63.4 million volunteers donating approximately 8.1 billion hours of services across the country (volunteeringinamerica.gov). Apparently there are other people that feel the same way.

Good day! I am so excited to join the blogging team on XLCountry.com. While I’m addicted to email and Facebook, I have never blogged-so be patient with me. My name is JoLynn Miller and I work for Gallatin County 4-H in two capacities: 1. as the 4-H Military Program Coordinator and 2. as the Montana 4-H Mentorship Program Site Coordinator.
