If you’ve ever taken a trip to Yellowstone, you know two things. One, the geysers are jaw-droppingly gorgous. Two, the wind will absolutely snatch your favorite ball cap right off your head. Turns out, that second one is a bigger deal than most visitors realize.

The U.S. Geological Survey put it bluntly in a recent post: “a near-constant stream of trash and hats being blown into the delicate hydrothermal areas.” And by stream, they mean not just five or ten pieces of trash into the boiling pools.

Yellowstone isn’t just Wyoming’s crown jewel, it stretches into Montana, too. The winds that whip across the boardwalks don’t just scatter your sunflower seed shells or gum wrappers; they send them straight into some of the rarest, most fragile natural features in the world.

That’s where the Yellowstone Geology Program team comes in. These folks are basically part scientist, part ninja, part janitor. Armed with grabber poles that look ridiculously long to keep the workers safe. Some of them are even 30-foot-long contraptions. They fish out everything from Louis Vuitton knockoffs to pizza boxes. Yes, actual pizza boxes. Still with slices inside.

"Favorite finds from the team during the summer of 2025 include a Birkenstock sandal, a pizza box with slices still inside, a fake Louis Vuitton bucket hat, a stuffed koala toy, a ball cap with the phrase 'I PEE IN THE LAKE,' and a Polaroid picture of Excelsior Geyser—which was found within Excelsior Geyser’s crater!" - USGS

So far this year? Over 13,000 pieces of trash collected. Over 300 hats alone.

The takeaway? Next time you’re marveling at Old Faithful, remember your hat and trail snacks aren’t at high risk of blowing away, and then you turn into an accidental litter bug. If they end up in the hot springs, they could change the way these natural wonders behave, and it creates more work for the park service. So hang on to your cap!
