Since 2008, Yellowstone National Park has increased its annual visitation by nearly 40 percent, and 2017 was there second busiest year on record. 4.1 million people made their way to the park last year, down just slightly from the 4.2 million visitors in 2016.

Seeing record attendance over the past few years, park officials are now working on the following issues:

  • How can the park prepare for a future in which visitation continues to increase?
  • How does the increased visitation affect park resources and visitor experiences?
  • What do people expect when they come to Yellowstone?
  • How do people move through the park?

The park actually began working on answers to these questions back in the summer of 2016. It is their mission to continue preserving Yellowstone's resources and the experience of those visitors who come to enjoy the park.
